Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent formation of crust and raw material hanging, by controlling air passing through a clearance between the upper end of the furnace shell and the rising wall of a heat shelter or through a poking window, and air introduced into the periphery of the lower parts of electrodes in order to restrain the O2 content of the exhaust gas.
CONSTITUTION: Either one or both of the clearance 4 between the upper end of the furnace shell 7 and the rising wall 3 of a heat shelter 2, or a poking window 5 are made adjustable. Hereby, flow direction of combustion flame formed from the combustible gas rising from the reaction zone in the furnace is turned radially from the central part to the periphery of the furnace, so that the flow of the combustion flame is directed near the furnace of the blended raw material charged into the furnace, and the oxygen content of the exhaust gas discharged through the exhaust duct 9 of the heat shelter is controlled in a range 12W17% by volume, by controlling the quantity of air flowing into the furnace through the clearance 4 or the window 5 by adjusting the openings of the clearance or the window, or simultaneously by controlling the quantity of air introduced through an air-introducing pipe 6 to the periphery of the lower part of the electrodes.
