Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a magnetism generator which is optimal as a magnetic scale to detect a position on a two dimensional plane, by alternately providing the first magnetized portions magnetized as N-poles and the second magnetized portions magnetized as S-poles on the two dimensional plane.
CONSTITUTION: N-pole magnetized portions 5 and S-pole magnetized protions 6 are alternately provided in a magnetic scale 1 so that the magnetized portions 5, 6 are placed in longitudinal and latitudinal directions. Signaling magnetic fields HSX, HSY of λX, λY in wavelength are generated between the magnetized portions 5, 6 so that the magnetic fields perpendicularly intersect each other. A magnetic lattice is provided to apply the magnetic fields to a magnetoelectric transducing element 2. The electrical current passage 7 of the trnsducer is made of a reluctance element of ferromagnetic metal. The current passage 7 shows its maximum resistance when the direction of a bias current IB is parallel with that of magnetization, and shows its minimum resistance when these directions perpendicularly intersect each other. As a result, a detection output which repeatedly varies and corresponds to the wavelength of λx appears in the current passage 7 due to the relative movement of the converter 2. Position change can be detected by utilizing the detected output.
