PURPOSE:To improve stability in the operation, by comunicating the two oil chambers and providing them respectively with a plate valve at one end that is free to be opened and closed and with a rotary washer at the other end that is free to be opened and closed and connecting the rotary washer to the operating rod, and by piercing the piston ports through the piston of a shock absorber. CONSTITUTION:When the piston speed is in the low speed range, the working oil in the upper oil chamber flexes the lower plate valve 19 through the passage 20 in the plate valve 18, and a damping force is generated by this plate valve 19. When the piston speed exceeds a certain speed, a damping force in the high speed range is generated by resistances of the piston ports 12, 13..., 17. Further, the operating rod 25 rotates the rotary washer 30 to limit the number of opened ports of the piston ports 12, 13..., 17, whereby to regulate the damping force. Stability in the operation is improved by thus making the damping force characteristics variable.
