Abstract

PURPOSE:To regulate from the cabin damping force in a shock absorber used for the suspension mechanism of an automobile, etc., by providing a shock absorber with an orifice communicating with the hole piercing in the direction of the shaft of a piston rod and constituting an orifice in such a way as to open and close freely according to the movements of the piston rod. CONSTITUTION:When a changeover switch 17 is at a constant position, the air in an air chamber 19 flows into the lower chamber 14 of an auxiliary cylinder 9 and a piston 10 is raised, when a clutch pedal is stepped in. Accordingly, a piston rod 18 is raised and an orifice 5 is opened. Conversely, if a changeover switch 17 is at the opposite position, the air in an air chamber 19 flows into the upper chamber 13 of the auxiliary cylinder 9 and the piston 10 is lowered against the spring 11. Accordingly, the rod 8 is lowered and the orifice 5 is opened. The opening and closing of the orifice 5 makes the damping force against increase in the piston speed small and large respectively. In this way the damping force can be changed in two steps according to loading conditions by opening and closing the orifice.
