Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the coupling of unnecessary light and make possible the measurement of weak light by making use of the crystal which has double refractive action. CONSTITUTION:Light from a fiber 2 is collimated by a lens 4 and enters calcite 9 and if the axial direction of the calcite 9 is beforehand suitably selected, the light is divided to two optical paths 10, 11 by its double refraction. The respective lights are entered to fibers 1, 3 by lenses 5, 6. Similarly, part of the light from the fiber 3 advances to the fiber 1. The double refraction phenomenon depends upon the plane of polarization of light. When the light of the optical path 13 incident from the point 17 causes the end face reflection of the calcite 9 at the point 19, this reflected light has the polarization perpendicular to the plane of the paper and therefore the light fully returns in the optical path 13 and does not advance to the optical path 14. Hence, when the device is constituted by using calcite, the coupling from the fiber 1-3 or from the fiber 3-1 does not occur. In this way, the powerful light is entered from the fiber 1-2 and at the same time the weak light from the fiber 2 may be observed at the output end of the fiber 3 without being hampered by the reflection of this light.
