Abstract
PURPOSE: To change the mineral composition of slag and prevent its collapse, by putting a prescribed quantity of clay slate or shale, which is molten at a temperature lower than that of the molten slag of a converter or an electric furnace, into the molten slag.
CONSTITUTION: Clay slate or shale, which is molten at a temperature lower than that of the molten slag of a converter or an electric furnace, into the molten slag. The quantity of the clay slate or shale is such that the free CaO and 2CaO.SiO2 in the steel slag are eliminated. The clay slate or shale reacts with the slag so that the mineral composition of the slag is stabilized. The uncollapsable slag is thus produced without quanching. Since this slag does not collapse or expand, it can be utilized for ballast, sand or the like and the handling of the slag such as transportation is easy.
