Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain hydrocarbon resins capable of improving initial bond strength without reduction of maintenance strength and adhesion, in the preparation of rubber adhesives, by copolymerizing 1,3-pentadiene, diisobutylene and α-methylstyrene.
CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixture, containing 30W80wt% of 1,3-pentadiene, 5W40wt% of diisobutylene, 5W40wt% of α-methylstyrene and 0W15wt% of 1,3- butadiene, in which the wt. ratio of diisobutylene to α-methylstyrene is 1:3W3:1, is cationically polymerized in the presence of diluents and Friedel-Crafts catalysts, to obtain resins of molecular weight 500W2,000 and softening point 60W140°C, containing, in the polymer chain, 30W85wt% of 1,3-pentadiene unit, 4W32wt% of diisobutylene unit, 5W40wt% of 2-methylstyrene unit and 0W12wt% of 1,3-butadiene, in which the wt. ratio of a dissobutylene unit to a α-methylstyrene unit is 1:4W2:1.
