Abstract

PURPOSE: An oil composed of hydrocarbons are used as a starting material and polymerized using a combination of boron trifluoride as a major catalyst with specific cocatalysts to produce a hydrocarbon resin having controlled color phase, softening point, viscosity and molecular weight or its distribution in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: (A) An aliphatic chain unsaturated hydrocarbon, dicyclopentadiene or aromatic hydrocarbon is used as a starting material and polymerized in the presence of (B) boron trifluoride as a major catalyst and (C) cocatalysts such as (i) an alcohol, (ii) a phenol, (iii) a cyclic ether, (iv) a hydroperoxide and other compounds at -10W80°C, preferably at 0W60°C. The proportion of each component is 0.1W10wt% (B) based on (A), 0.1W1 i/B in mole, 0.5W10 ii/B in mole, 0.1W5 iii/B in mole or 0.1W2 iv/B in mole.
