PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as an intermediate of pigments and dyes, in high purity and yield, in high concentration, smoothly, by the condensation reaction of o-phenylenediamine with urea in a polar neutral organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A benzimidazolone derivative of formula II, e.g. 5-nitrobenzimidazolone-(2), is prepared by condensing (A) 1 part by weight of an o-phenylenediamine derivative of formula I (R is H, halogen, nitro, cyano, or lower alkyl), e.g. 4-nitro-1,2-phenylenediamine with (B) urea, in (C) 0.5W2 parts, pref. 0.5W1 part of a polar neutral organic solvent such as sulfolane, dimethyl sulfoxide, N,N- dimethylformamide, and N-methylpyrrolidone, at 100W200°C, pref. 140W180°C.
