Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain fluorosulfonic acid safely and economically by allowing sulfuric anhydride to be absorbed in fluorosulfonic acid; blowing gaseous hydrofluoric anhydride in amts. about equimolar with the sulfuric anhydride; and reacting them.
CONSTITUTION: Liquid or gaseous sulfuric anhydride is allowed to be dissolution- absorbed in liquid fluorosulfonic acid kept at about 20W40°C. Gaseous hydrofluoric anhydride is then slowly blown into the fluorosulfonic acid with the sulfuric anhydride absorbed in a SO3 to HF molar ratio of about 1, e.g., 0.9W1.1, and it is reacted with the sulfuric anhydride to form fluorosulfonic acid. This reaction can be performed continuously. Fluorosulfonic acid and sulfuric anhydride are fed quantitatively and continously to an absorption vessel equipped with a cooler, and the fluorosulfonic acid with the sulfuric anhydride absorbed is allowed to overflow into a reaction vessel, where gaseous hydrofluoric anhydride corresponding to the sulfuric anhydride is blown quantitatively and continuously and reacted with the sulfuric anhydride to form fluorosulfonic acid.
