Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the anti-compression strength of a thick steel pipe having a small outside diameter of 50mm or less by heating the pipe from the outside and simultaneously feeding a refrigerant into the pipe to cool it from the inside.
CONSTITUTION: A steel or stainless steel pipe having an outside diameter of 50mm or less and a relatively large thickness to the outside diameter, e.g., a fuel feed pipe for a Diesel internal combustion engine is heated to a temp. zone near the transformation point from the outside with a high frequency induction heater or other heater. Simultaneously with this heating operation an aq. soln. of ethylene glycol or glycerol, butanol or a refrigerant such as liquefied carbon dioxide is fed into the pipe to cool the pipe inside. By this treatment the pipe is provided with a sectional structure in which tensile stress and compressive stress are left and distributed on the outside and inside all over the length, respectively, thereby preventing occurrence of cracks and damage and enhancing the anti-compression strength.
