NEW MATERIAL:A bicyclooctane derivative of formula I (Y and Y' are H or hydroxyl-protecting groups).
EXAMPLE: 2β-( 3'-Trityloxy-trans-1'-propenyl )-3α-hydroxy-bicyclo( 3,3,0 )octan-7- one.
USE: An intermediate for synthesis of prostaglandin analogs having a powerful blood platelet aggregation inhibitory effect.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula III (W is keton-protecting group) resulting from the protection of the ketone group of 2β-hydroxymethyl-3α-hydroxy- bicyclo[3,3,0]octan-7-one with a ketone-protecting group, e.g. an ethylene ketal, is oxidized. The compound of formula IV thus obtained is reacted with a Witting reagent, and reduced with a metal hydride, e.g. lithium alminum hydride, to give the compound of formula V, whose ketone-protecting group is removed and whose hydroxyl group is protected, if necessary, to obtain the compound of formula I.
