Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily increase gear-shifting steps of an automatic transmission equipped with a torque converter at a relatively low cost, by providing two additional gear-shifting steps with the converter and properly using these steps.
CONSTITUTION: A torque converter 1 drives its pump impeller 2 by means of an input shaft 13 through a cover 12, which hydraulically turns a turbine runner 3 for taking off power from an output shaft 25. A planetary gear assembly 17 is provided close to the turbine runner 3, its internal gear 18 being riveted to the runner 3 by a rivet 9 and a sun gear 20 being fitted to a hollow stationary shaft 15 through a one-way clutch 21. A carrier 24 of the assembly 17 is connected with the output shaft 25 and also with the input shaft 13 through a lockup clutch piston 26 available for engagement.
