Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately detect such a signal alone that represents a flaw on the surface of a slab, by properly controlling the timing of writing and reading of a memory for one scanning line.
CONSTITUTION: Infrared rays at a scanning point are reflected on a many-sided reflector by a scanning detector 3 to scan the whole width of a slab 1, and the infrared rays are condensed by an infrared detector. The detection of a flaw in the surface of the slab 1 is carried out in the above manner. In this flaw detection system, a memory for memorizing the waveform of a temperature signal of one scanning line, and a means for properly controlling the timing of writing and reading of this memory are provided. Scanning lines extending from the left end L of the slab 1 to the right end R thereof via the center line C are moved in the shape of a tangential wave having an origin on the center line C along the surface of the slab 1 when the scanning is carried out at an equal angular velocity during an effective period of scanning. A signal output corresponding to the position of each scanning line on the slab is detected. The reading of the content of the memory and the removal of unnecessary signals for edge portions are carried out during a blank period of scanning.
