Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent the corrosion of the positive electrode grid and thereby extend the cycle life, by establishing the electrolyte specific gravity below a predetermined value during discharge for a lead-acid battery in which an antimony-free load alloy is used for the positive grid.
CONSTITUTION: An antimony-free lead alloy such as lead-calcium alloy and lead- tin alloy is used for the positive grid. The quantity of electrolyte is more than 1.2cc per 1g of positive active material. The electrolyte specific gravity is established such that the 20°C converted specific gravity is below 1.30 when the battery is fully charged and below 1.18 after discharge for 2 hours in the capacity test at 5-hour discharge rate.
