Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a developer composition for pressure-sensitive copying paper, the color of which is not changed to yellow when it is exposed to light or while it is stored, by subjecting phenol and formaldehyde to a reaction, adding a special additive such as benzotriazole compound to the resulting reaction product at a special ratio, and thereafter subjecting the resulting mass to steam distillation or the like. CONSTITUTION:Phenol and formaldehyde (generating compound) is subjected to a reaction in a hydrophobic organic solvent in the presence of an acidic catalyst. To the reaction mixture thus obtained is added at least one of the additives of A) 1-10pts.wt. of a benzotriazole compound of the formula I (wherein X is H, Cl, etc.; and Y1, Y2 are H, 1-12C alkyl, etc.), B) 1-20pts.wt. of hindered phenol compound consisting of phenol derivative in which 2- and/or 6-position is substituted by alkyl group, C) 1-10pts.wt., respectively, of the components A and B, and D) 1-10pts.wt. of the component A and 1-10pts.wt. of dialkyl thioether derivative of the formula II (wherein R is 1-16C alkylene; and R2, R3 are 8-22C alkyl). An aqueous alkali solution is added to the mixture thus obtained, and the resulting mass is subjected to steam distillation. The aqueous solution of phenolate thus obtained is then subjected to deposition with acid.
