EXAMPLE:2, 3 - Dimethoxy -5- methyl -6- bromohydroquinone -1, 4- dimethoxyethoxy-methyl ether. USE:Intermediate for preparation of coenzyme Q and vitamin K. Stable to acids and bases. PROCESS:A hydroquinone derivative having a free hydroxyl group of formula II, e.g. 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-bromohydroquinone, is dissolved in a solvent and made to react with a methoxyethoxymethyl halide of formula III (X=halogen), e.g. methoxyethoxymethyl chloride, in the presence of NaH to give the corresponding objective compound of formula I. The protecting group can be easily removed by the coupling reaction followed by heating in ethanol in the presence of a catalytic amount of hydrobromic acid or hydrochloric acid.
