Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an alloy having excellent stress corrosion resistance and machinability, by adding specific amounts of Mn, Si, Sn, Pb, Cu to an Al-Zn-Mg alloy.
CONSTITUTION: The alloy comprises, by weight, 3W6 % Zn, 0.5W2.5 % Mg, 0.3W0.8 % Mn, 0.35W0.8 % Si, 0.3W1 % Sn, 0.3W1 % Pb, 0.1W0.4 % Cu, the balance being substantially Al. Preheat treatment of the cast ingot of the alloy in flattening at temps. up to about 350°C causes uniform, fine Mg-Si compound to precipitate, and, in the following step, fine Mn compounds such as Al-Mn, Al-Mn- Si etc. precipitate around the Mg-Si compound.
