Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the optical system of an optical pickup unit simple and small- size to make complicated and precise adjustment needless by using a semiconductor laser having a large-thickness light guide line consisting of muti-layer hetero junction and a narrow-width stripe electrode. CONSTITUTION:The laser light beam radiated from semiconductor laser 1 is condensed by optical system 2 consisting of lenses 2a and 2b and is focused on, for example, video disc 3. The laser light reflected by disc 3 is returned through the light path of optical system 2 and is incident onto semiconductor laser 1. Disc 3 records information, for example, with arrangement of holes, arrangement of convexes and concaves, etc., and information is read by detecting the transmission light or the reflection light of the irradiated laser light. In this case, a little-anisotropy laser light beam can be obtained because semiconductor laser 1 consists of multi- layer hetero junction and the light guide path is 1mu or more thick and the stripe electrode is 5mu or less partially at least, so that the optical system can be simplified to obtain good reproducing.
