Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the memory capacity while increasing the compressibility of even a pattern small in matrix size by storing respective variable-length coded characters in a character pattern memory part paying attention to the appearance frequency of blocks.

CONSTITUTION: Sub-patterns constituting a character pattern expressed by a matrix are converted into previously-fixed bit patterns, which are divided into several block patterns and the code of each character obtained from the block pattern by variable- length coding is stored in character pattern memory part 14. Then, the inputted character code is tempolarily stored in character code register 12 and converted by address generation part 13 into the storage initial address of a code equivalent to the corresponding character of memory part 14, and read control part 15 reads out coded data from memory part 14. Further, the read-out code string is converted into a sub-pattern and outputted by way of code separation part 16, bit pattern conversion part 17, bit pattern editing part 18, sub-pattern conversion part 19 and pattern output control part 21.
