Abstract

PURPOSE: To economize energy and raise the efficiency of denitrification, by circulating the both liquids in a denitrifying section and a nitrifying section communicating with each other, to the nitrifying section through a pump, introducing an O2-containing gas into a circulation passage and causing aeration.
CONSTITUTION: NH4-N-containing waste water such as night soil flows from a foul water inlet part 8 into a denitrifying section 1. NOx-N produced in a nitrifying section 2 is reduced into N2 by denitrifying bacteria while BOD in the waste water is used as an organic carbon source. The liquid 5 in the denitrifying section and the liquid 5' in the nitrifying section are circulated to the nitrifying section 2 by a circulation pump 4. After NH4-N in the circulated denitrified liquid is oxidized into NOx-N such as NO2-N or NO3-N by nitrifying bacteria and O2, the liquid is circulated to the denitrifying section 1 through a communication passage 3. O2-containing gas 7 such as air is introduced into the discharge pipe 6 of the pump 4. Aeration is caused by the fall of the pump discharge flow onto the surface of the liquid in the nitrifying section 2.
