Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily obtain an intensity modulation element having a long life for facsimile, etc. in a high yield by placing directly or indirectly a diffraction grid on a piezoelectric high molecular film.
CONSTITUTION: A polymer or copolymer film based on vinylidene fluoride, etc. is drawn and oriented to produce a film rich in β-type crystal structure. This film is polarized under a high voltage DC electric field. On one side of piezoelectric film 1 thus formed diffraction grid 3 made of collodion or high molecular film is placed, and electrodes 2, 2' are attached to both sides of film 1. One or both of electrodes 2, 2' are made transparent or translucent. Transparent film 4 with grid 3 attached may be placed on electrode 2. Next pinhole 5 is made in grid 3 and electrode 2 or film 1 and electrodes 2, 2'. For example, by transmitting laser beams 11 and applying a voltage to electrodes 2, 2' film 1 contracts, and beams 11 are partially diffracted by grid 3, emitting diffracted light 12. Intensity modulation is accomplished by making use of a change of light 12 according to the voltage.
