Abstract

PURPOSE: To secure monitoring at all times for the optical fiber by the presence or absence of the optical pulse reflected by providing previously the uneven points or the light reflecting parts due to the half-mirror and the like to the optical fiber with proper distances.
CONSTITUTION: Light reflecting parts 2 are provided to optical fiber 1 with proper distances by the method in which the reflecting material is evaporated to the cross section of the fiber or other methods. As a result, when the optical pulse is transmitted from the terminal of fiber 1, part of the optical pulse propagating within fiber 1 is reflected at part 2. This reflected pulse is measured along the time axis (lateral axis), and thus waveform 5 is observed. In case the fiber is cut off between the No. n and No. (n+1) reflecting parts counted from the measurement end of fiber 1, only n-units of reflected optical pulse is observed. Thus, the cut-off area of the fiber can be detected by counting the number of the reflected optical pulse.
