Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable smooth rise of a main discharge current and to prevent the transfer from glow discharge to arc discharge by ensuring that a pilot discharge starts before a main power voltage reaches the minimum keep voltage of glow discharge.
CONSTITUTION: In a glow discharge heater circuit, an a-c voltage from a main power source 4 is applied across main electrodes 1 and 2. With a switch 9 closed and a zero-voltage switch 11 operated, a high-voltage wave (from zero point) is applied across an auxiliary electrode 3 and the main electrodes 1-2 through a boosting transformer 6 (used for auxiliary power source), so that a smooth glow discharge is developed across the electrodes 1 and 2 for heating. A high-voltage pulse generating circuit 14 is provided for feeding the electrode 3 with a pulse voltage which rises before the voltage across the electrodes 1 and 2 reaches the minimum keep voltage for the discharge and which thereafter falls sharply.
