Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a nitrifying method, capable of ammoniacal nitrogen contained in waste water promptly and in simple and economical manner, by forming a jet stream layer of waste water downwardly of an expansion layer which forms a fluidized bed of microorganism attached to solid-particle carrier.
CONSTITUTION: Fluidized bed of microorganism attached to solid-particle carrier is formed, and downwardly of the fluidized bed, a jet stream layer of waste water to be treated is formed to range from the bottom of tank to 1/10W1/4 of the fluidized bed. Such a jet stream layer can be formed, for instance, by selecting the values of maximum diameter D(m) of the tank and rate Q (m3/min) at which water to be treated is ejected from nozzle, such that they hole a relation-ship, 0.12 D2≤Q≤0.72 D2. With such an arrangement, a stable expansion layer is formed at an upper portion of the jet stream layer and stagnation in the nitrifying tank can be prevented. Thus, ammoniacal nitrogen contained in waste water can be removed with considerable reduction of treatment time. Further, operation and maintenance of the system can be simplified and at the same time its installation costs can be also lowered.
