Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the subject method comprising controlling the oxidation reduction potential of an aeration tank, and subjecting organic and ammoniacal liquid wastes to an activated sludge treatment, thereby to inhibit the nitrification reaction of ammonia and to effect smoothly the activated sludge treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Liquid wastes from coke manufacturing plants in which organic contaminated substances and ammoniacal compounds are stored in a storage tank 2 and thereafter diluted in a mixing tank 3, and further rendered to substantially a neutrality in a pH adjusting tank 4. Thereafter, the liquid wastes are subjected to an activated sludge treatment in the aeration tank 5 by rendering the oxidation reduction potential within the aeration tank 5 in a range of +50mV to +150mV by automatically controlling a blower 12. Then, the nitrification reaction in which ammoniacal compounds in the liquid wastes are converted into nitrogen oxides is inhibited to prevent the lowering of pH in the aeration tank 5 and the lowering of activated sludge functions. Then, the areation tank 5 operates smoothly and decomposition and removal of organic contaminated substances are carried out efficiently.
