Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the lowering of luminescence of photobacterium during storage, to improve the storage life of the bacterium, and to utilize the bacterium in an industrial scale (e.g. fluorescent feed, fish-luring light, etc.), by freezing bacteria belonging to Photobacterium genus, in an aqueous medium containing specific compound.
CONSTITUTION: Bacteria belonging to Photobacterium are frozen in water containing 1-20% of a polyhydric alcohol, erythritol, threonine, glucose, sucrose, and/or sorbitol, and 1-8% of salt. The bacteria are obtained by culturing Photobacterium phosphorium which is a symbiont of deep-sea cod.
