Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a pyruvate industrially economically in a high yield in one stage, by dehyrogenation of a lactate in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. platinum.
CONSTITUTION: A lactate, e.g. methyl lactate, etc. is dehydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst containing one or two or more types of metals selected from platinum, palladium, rhodium, and ruthenium in the gaseous phase, preferably in an atmosphere of an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen at a partial pressure of the lactate of 0.3W0.05 atm at 150W400°C for 0.5W10 sec to give a pyruvate. The reaction product is isolated by distillation, and the unreacted lactate can be reused. The catalyst preferably consists of 0.01W10 wt.% of the metal on a carrier, e.g. alumina, silica, etc.
USE: An intermediate for metabolism pathways in vivo, raw material for physiologically active materials, and for L-tryptophan, L-cysteine, and L-tyrosine.
