Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a descharge lamp which has a high binding strength of electron emitting substance and can have its starting voltage reduced and its light flux maintaining ratio heightened by keeping the electron emitting performance high.
CONSTITUTION: A pair of electrodes 4 and an auxiliary electrode 41 are provided at sealed parts 3 on both the ends of a tube 2 made of quartz glass. Each of the electrodes 4 is made by providing an electrode coil of high melting point metal around an electrode shaft 7 and providing an electron emitting substance layer 9 between the shaft 7 and the coil 8. The layer 9 contains tungstate. The tungsten content percentage is gradually reduced toward the external surface of the layer 9. Since the tungstate serves as aggregate, the binding strength of the electron emitting substance is heightened. Because the percentage of the electron emitting substance is gradually raised toward the external surface of the layer 9, the electron emitting performance is kept high. As a result, the starting voltage can be reduced and the light flux maintaining ratio can be heightened.
