Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce an optical transmission optical fiber, which is excellent in corrosion resistance and bending characteristics and which is strong against fatigue, by melting and spinning such a preform in the non-oxidizing atmosphere as is coated with metal immediately after its surface is cleaned. CONSTITUTION:A glass preform 11, which has its surface sufficiently cleaned by the HF rinsing process and by a flame polishing process, is coated with molten metal by a blower 16 to form a metal layer 12, while being turned and zxially moved back and forth. Then, a preform 21, which coated with metal coating 22, is fed into a heat source 23 in a reducing or inert atmosphere so that it is molten and spun while being wetted with the molten metal. As the above metal, it is possible to use a metal point which has a melting point lower than the spinning temperature and a boiling sufficiently higher than the same, such as Si, Ge, Sn, Pg or Al (or their alloy).
