Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve surface smoothness, abrasion resistance, running characteristic, etc. of a magnetic recording medium by forming the magnetic recording medium with the graft polymer of a linear polymer having hydroxyl groups and a polymer of a specific molecular weight having isocyanate groups as a binder.
CONSTITUTION: A linear polymer such as the copolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, etc. of about 20,000 to 50,000 in mean molecular weight and about 60°C or higher in glass transition temperature having one or more (preferafbly more then 3) reactive hydroxyl groups in the main chain and polyvinyl alcohol (where vinyl alcohol is less than 10mole%) and a plymer of 2000 to 20000 in mean molecular weight having one or two reactive isocyanate groups are caus ed to react to a graft copolymer, which is then used as a binder for magnetic powder in producing the magnetic recording medium. The glass transition temperature of the abovementioned copolymer is desirably more than 30°C.
