Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an oil-soluble alkaline metal salt useful for an additive for lubricants and grease, a rust preventive, etc., containing a high concentration of an alkali metal salt, by reacting an alcohol with an alkali hydroxide, followed by reacting the reaction product with carbon dioxide.
CONSTITUTION: Not less than 0.02 mole of an alcohol shown by the formula I, II, or III (R1 is benzyl, 6W18C alkyl, 18C alkenyl; R2 is H, 1W8C alkyl; m is 2W6; R3 is H, methyl; R4 is H, benzyl, 1W8C alkyl; n is 2W8), e.g., dipropylene glycol, is reacted with one mole of an alkali hydroxide in an organic solvent such as toluene, etc. The resulting product is reacted with carbon dioxide after removal of the formed water, thus giving an oil-soluble alkali metal salt wherein a colloidal alkali metal carbonate is dispersed uniformly.
