Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a uniformly and highly foamed closed-cell crosslinked polyethylene molded article, having higt heat resistance, economically, by irradiating a polyethylene molded article containing a low molecular weight compound and an organic peroxide with ultra-violet ray thereby crosslinking the article, and impregnating the crosslinked article with an evaporation-type foaming agent followed by heating and foaming thereof.
CONSTITUTION: An organic peroxide is added to a resin composition composed of (A) 75W40wt% of high density polyethylene, (B) 20W5wt% of a low molecular weight compound miscible with said polyethylene resin, and having an average molecular weight of 300W5000, e.g. paraffin wax, polybutene, polyethylene wax, etc., and (C) 5W55wt% of low density polyethylene, and the mixture is kneaded and molded. The molded article is crosolinked by irradiating with ultra-violet ray at a temperature above the melting point of the high density polyethylene and at temperature and time conditions under which the foaming of the article does not occur without the UV-irradiation. After the crosslinking, the article is impregnated with a normally gaseous evaporation-type foaming agent under high temperature and pressure, and foamed by heating.
