Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the cold formability, impact resistance, and vacuum formability of a foamed polyethylene article, by mixing a specific low-density polyethylene with a specific polyethylene, and crosslinking and foaming the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of (A) preferably 50W80pts.wt. of a low-density polyethylene having a melting point of <115°C and a density of ≤0.935g/cm3 and (B) preferably 50W20pts.wt. of a polyethylene composed of ethylene and a 5W20C α-olefin and having a melt flow rate of preferably 0.1W50g/10min, a density of 0.915W0.935g/cm3, a melting point of 115W127°C and a molecular weight distribution of ≤6 is incorporated with a foaming agent which evolves gas by heating (e.g. azodicarbonamide). The composition is molten and kneaded at a temperature below the decomposition point of the foaming agent, molded, crosslinked, and foamed by heating at or above the decomposition point of the foaming agent to obtain the objective foamed article.
