Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled foam having good extrusion muldability and excellent mechanical strength, dimensional stability and heat insulation, by melting and kneading a specific high molecular weight polystyrene resin with a volatile foaming agent in the presence of a specific solvent, and extruding the molten material to a low-pressure zone.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A polystyrene resin having a weight-average molecular weight of (20W35)×104 determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) [a (co)polymer containing styrene as a main monomer component]is mixed with (B) 2,500W7,000ppm of a solvent miscible with the component A under molten state, and having a boiling point of pref. 70W170°C (1 atm) (e.g. ethylbenzene) and (C) 8W17 PHR of a volatile foaming agent (e.g. a mixture of CF2Cl2, C2H5Cl and CH3Cl at wt. ratios of 60:20:20) based on the component A, and the mixture is kneaded under melting and foamed.
