Abstract

PURPOSE: To judge the embrittlement of stainless steel welding metal by defining the loss of δ ferrite quantity as less than 5% with a ferrite meter.
CONSTITUTION: The heat treatment having been carried out with an austenite base stainless steel welding metal for 5 hours, 15 hours B and 30 hours A at 700°C indicates that irrespective of the large or small of the initial ferrite quantity or variations in heating conditions there is possibility of causing cracking in the welding metal in all cases when the loss of δ ferrite exceeds 5% and no cracking occurs if the loss is below 5%. Hence, the degree of the embrittlement of the austenite base stainless steel welding metal may be evaluated by measuring the loss of the δ ferrite quantity form the initial δ ferrite quantity.
