Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to effect such compensation as can always make the decoupling efficiency of a metering output prism constant by providing a monitoring prism at a distance from a metering output prism.
CONSTITUTION: The incident light of a preset quantity, which has passed through a input decouple prism 4 fixed by fixing jig 5, propagates through an optical waveguide 2 for a thin film to be metered, which is placed upon a substrate 3, and further passes through an output decouple prism 7, which is placed at a selected position of the waveguide 2 by means of a jig 8, so that it may be detected by an optical detector 11 and so that the transmission loss of the waveguide 2 is metered. On the other hand, the transmission loss is monitored by the decouple prism 12 and an optical detector 15, the former of which is fixed at a more distant position than the prism 7. The decoupling effeciency variation of the prism 7 due to the variation in the air gap between the prism 7 and the waveguide 2 during movement of the set position of the prism 7 is easily compensated by the monitor through the prism 12, which has a constant decoupling efficiency, thus improving the metering accuracy
