Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce fuel consumption of an Otto-cycle engine and minimize the amount of NOx contained in the exhaust gas, by chemically activating a portion of mixture with starting of induction discharge near the bottom dead point before entering into compression cycle, thereby diluting the mixture and improving ignitability of fuel, notwithstanding that amount of exhaust gas recirculated is increased. CONSTITUTION:In addition to a first ignition means 20 which applies a high voltage to ignition plug 18 for ignition of mixture, the ignition plug 18 is connected with a second ignition means 30 which produces induction discharge at the ignition plug 18. The second ignition means 30 consists of a synchronous pulse generator 31 for generating pulses synchronus with the revolution of engine 10, a driving pulse generator 32 for generating driving pulses in response to the synchronous pulses, transistor 33 and converter 34. With generation of pulses from pulse generator 32 near the bottom dead center during suction cycle, discharge of ignition plug 18 is started and maintained, and redical forming reaction is caused in the mixture so that it is highly activated chamically. Thus, ignitability of mixture is extremely enhanced.
