Abstract

PURPOSE: To isolate a powdery solid polyarylene ester having a high bulk density and uniform particle size, by adding a specific amount of a non-solvent to the solution obtained by the interfacial reaction of a divalent phenolic compound with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (derivative), and aging the solution.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A divalent phenolic compound (e.g. hydroquinone, etc.) expressed by the formla I (Ar and Ar' are phenylene, etc.; X is alkylene, etc.) is reacted with (B) a reactive derivative of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (e.g. phthaloyl dichloride, etc.) expressed by the formula II (Ar" is phenylene, etc.) in tetrahydrofuran and/or dioxane so as to give preferably 5-20wt.% solution of the polymer concentration. Then, a non-solvent for the polymer (e.g. methanol, etc.), (70-130% on the basis of the amount to give the cloud point for the reaction solution) is added and aged. The solid polymer is separated by filtration, etc. to give a solid polyarylene ester
