Abstract

PURPOSE: The steel powde for powder metallurgy having excellent characteristics, which is obtained by compounding the atomized steel powder as it is or the atomized steel powder annealed at a low temperature in a definite ratio to the powder of atomized steel to which the reducting and softening treatments have been applied.
CONSTITUTION: Because the atomized steel powder is too hard in the hardened state and has the oxide coating on its surface, this steel powder is reduced and annealed by being heated to 900W1000°C in hydrogen gas or the ammonia decomposition gas. As this reduced and annealed steel powder has an excellent compressibility, the pressure for molding must be reduced at the preparation of the sintered product of low density. As the result, the moldability is deteriorated, so that the atomized steel powder as it is or the steel powder obtained by annealing the above atomized powder at a low temperature of 600W800°C in an inert gas or in hydrogen gas, is mixed in a ratio of 10W40 wt.%. The mixed steel powder is excellent in both characteristics of compressibility and moldability and receives only a small adverse effect from the surface oxide, so that this steel powder is excellent as the material for sintered alloy
