Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible accurate detection of microscopic deformations of material inside and slight changes of AE produced at the failure by applying the current signal of a piezo-electric type probe in the form of amplified voltage signal to a light modulator.
CONSTITUTION: Distortions owing to intensity changes are produced in a probe 10 by the vibrations accompanied by the deformation or failure of piping 1 which delivers fluid. The light transmitted in an optical fiber cable 12A from a light transmitter 12 is modulated by said distortions and is transmitted to a light receiver 13 through cable 12B. In the receiver 13, the light is converted to an electric signal, which is then amplified in a conversion circit 14 to become an amplified electric signal 14A. The current 14A is inputted to a data recorder 16 and a data analyzing and processing unit 17, by which the distinct AE phenomena of not mixed with electric noises in the case of sudden and continuous AE may be detected. In the unit 17, comparison with the set value from a setter 18 is made and the phenomena above the value are judged to be AE phenomena. The occurrence of AE is then alarmed to an alarm display device 19 and the degree and location of AE may be displayed
