Abstract

PURPOSE: To form ferrite of large grain size by adding a specified amount of a ferrous salt to the waste water containing heavy metals, adding an alkali to the waste water so as to adjust the pH within certain limits, and vibrating the waste water while oxidizing the Fe2+.
CONSTITUTION: The waste water containing heavy metals such as Zn2+ and Cu2+ is added with at least 0.002 mole of ferrous salt such as FeSO4, and then with an alkali to adjust the pH within the range of 8 to 12. While vibrating the waste water by use of ultrasonic wave or the like, an oxidizing gas such as air is blown into the waste water to oxidize the Fe2+, to form ferromagnetic oxide of large grain size containing heavy metals therein. This method facilitates liquid-solid separation by filtration or magnetic separation, and leads to minimum re-elution of heavy metals from the ferromagnetic precipitate. The product is reused as wave-absorbing material, magnetic fluid raw material, or the like.
