Abstract

PURPOSE: To throttle a light beam in the main scanning direction, expand the light beam in the sub-scanning direction and maintain high resolution by providing a light beam converter between a light source and lenses.
CONSTITUTION: Laser light 22 emitted from a laser light source 21 is converted to an elliptical light beam 24 by the beam converter 23 provided on the exit side of the light source 21. It is further expanded to a light beam 27 by the lenses 25, 26 provided on the exit side of the converter 23. Further, the beam 27 is reflected by a scanning mirror 28 and is thence forcused by a lens 29 to the focusing beam 31 focused on the scanning plane 30 on the XY plane. The beam 31 is scanned in the X direction by rotating the mirror 28 within the XZ plane and each time when the scanning in the X direction ends, the plane 30 subsequently moves in the Y direction. The reflected light from the plane 30 is received in a photo detector 32, by which information is read out and the two-dimensional scanning is thus accomplished. Hence, scanning may be made densely in the sub-scanning direction without decreasing the resolution in the main scanneing direction and the laser scanning optical system which scans with the elliptical beam may be obtained.
