Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a super high pressure mercury discharge lamp, wherein mercury, an inert gas and bromine are sealed in a luminous tube of quartz, and electrodes of tungsten are provided thereby preventing blackening and loss of clarity of the luminous tube to prolong the life of the tube and obtaining stabilized arc.
CONSTITUTION: Within a luminous tube 1 of quartz are sealed argon, and mercury and bromine in the form of mercury bromide. Use are made of rods of pure tungsten to electrodes 6, 7 which are connected to molybdenum foils 8, 9 which in turn are connected to outer lead wires 10, 11 for being connected to a source of electric power. Thus when tungsten scattered from the electrodes during the discharge of the luminous tube 1 has adhered to an inner wall of the luminous tube 1, the tungsten will immediately combine with the bromine present in the luminous tube 1 to from tungsten bromide so that the inner wall will be cleaned up to prevent blackening of the inner wall. Further, ends of the electrodes 6, 7 cannot be roughened so that the position of arc spot will not be displaced to obtain stabilized arc.
