Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance in high purity, by reacting tetra-and dihydroanthrahydroquinones as first components and dihydroanthraquinone as a second component in a specific proportion with acrolein.
CONSTITUTION: Hydroanthraquinones are reacted with acrolein in an inert solvent and a ring closure agent at 50W150°C to give benzanthrone. 1,4,4a, 9a-Tetrahydroanthraquinone and/or 1,4-dihydroanthrahydroquinone (as first components) and 1,4-dihydroanthraquinone (as a second component) are used at a molar ratio of 55:45W80:20 as the hydroanthraquionones. A lower fatty acid, and an aromatic sulfone may be preferably used as the solvent and the ring closure agent respectively.
EFFECT: Easy crystallization and separation of product.
USE: Raw materials for indanthrene dyes or pigments.
