Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce highly purified benzoic acid which can be used as a feed additive such as fungicide, growth accelerating agent, etc., by evaporating crude benzoic acid in the inert gas stream, and cooling the vapor in the presence of a specific amount of inert gas.
CONSTITUTION: Crude benzoic acid containing 1,000-10,000 ppm of benzylbenzoate, benzophenone derivatives, and biphenyl derivatives, is evaporated by heating at 130W180°C, pref. 140W160°C, under the inert gas stream (e.g. air, N2, etc.). The inert gas containing the vaporized benzoic acid is cooled to 80W120°C, pref. 90W110°C, in the presence of ≥40 moles, pref. ≥60 moles of inert gas based on 1 mole of the benzoic acid in the vaporized component.
