Abstract

PURPOSE: To permit the industrial manufacture of a high hard BN sintered body for tools, which has so far been hard to manufacture, by adding AlN powder to fine cubic BN crystal powder.
CONSTITUTION: A metal powder composed mainly of AlN is added to cubic boron nitride(BN) crystal powder containing more than 80% fine particles of a less than 10 micron grain size and then the mixture is molded. The molding is then kept at 1200°C or more under a pressure of more than 40 kb for 5 minutes or more in a super high pressure vessel. The Vickers hardness of the sintered body obtained by this method is 3000 to 4000, much higher than that (2000) of the conventional products.
