Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease bending in welding, to make manufacture of nuclear fuel element efficient, and to improve the reliability for the element, by welding symmetrical positions simultaneously, in welding of a plug end for nuclear fuel element, by use of two or more electrodes or laser-irradiation positions installed at weld zone. CONSTITUTION:A cover-pipe 1, which is loaded with nuclear fuel and sealed with end plugs 2 at both ends, is inserted into an air tight chamber 10 and is sealed up in such a manner that it is rotatable at the inserting opening 11. Whole periphery of the nuclear fuel element is welded while the element being rotated by forming arc across the welding electrodes 4a, 4b arranged symmetrically with respect to the center of the element, facing to the weld zone 3. The welding may be carried out by laser welding or electron beam welding. This method makes it possible to manufacture efficiently highly reliable nuclear fuel elements, and to reduce process cost for the end plug 2 and cover-pipe 1.
