Abstract

1,254,579. Welding by fusion. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 12 Oct., 1967 [6 Nov., 1969], No. 54449/69. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] In an electron beam welding apparatus the beam is produced by means of a glow discharge between a cathode and the work, the spacing between the cathode and the work being less than the minimum at which long-path breakdown can occur except in the region to be heated. In the figure two tubes 8 and 9 to be butt welded together are supported end to end around a cathode 12 which has a portion 14 of reduced diameter opposite the join to be welded. The glass enclosure 2 can be evacuated through its lower end and supplied with argon through the pipe 16 to a desired pressure, e.g. 0À2 torr. At this pressure with 20 kV across the electrodes the minimum spacing for breakdown is 2À5 mm. and the spacing between the cathode and the tubes may be 2 mm. If the tubes have an internal diameter of 22 mm. the radius of curvature of the surface portion 14 may be 8 mm.
