Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture an olefin polymerization catalyst capable of forming highly crystalline olefinic polymer in high yield by the procedure in which a trivalent Ti compound, an electron donor, and a Mg-containing hallide or a Mn halide are ground together and then treated with titanium tetrahalide.
CONSTITUTION: A trivalent Ti compound, e.g., TiCl3, etc., an electron donor, e.g., ethyl benzoate, etc., and a Mg-containing halide, e.g., MgCl2, etc., or a Mn halide, e.g., MnCl2, etc., are ground together by a ball mill, etc., in the atmosphere of an inert gas at a temperature of -20 to 60°C. The preferred amount of the electron donor to add on the basis of the trivalent Ti compound is 0.5 to 10 mole. Then, the ground mixture is treated with a titanium tetrahalide, e.g., TiCl4, etc., at 20 to 80°C preferably to obtain a solid catalyst. The solid catalyst for excellent olefin polymerization can be obtained from a combination of organometallic compounds, e.g., Li[Al(CH3)3H], etc., containing the I or III group metal elements with the aforesaid compounds.
